Service
to indigent patients:
1.
Consultations : Till January 2003 'Calcutta Eye Research Foundation'
has organized fifty-nine free eye check-up camps at its center
'Sunetra', conducted complete ophthalmic evaluation for hundreds
of indigent patients. In addition, the staff and consultants of
the foundation render services free of charge, once a month, at
Sri Onkar Nath Seva Kendra,
Mahamilan Math, Calcutta. Moreover, in keeping with our philosophy
that medical service should not be limited by financial inability,
indigent patients have always received free outpatient services
at the foundation5 s clinic even on regular working days.
It
is calculated that of a total of 7100 consultations at 'Sunetra5
during the year April 2001 - March 2002, 4700 (66%) were of paying
category, 2400 (34%) were performed on a charitable basis. In
effect a total of Rs.4,66,650/- (Rupees four lakhs sixty-six thousand
and six hundred fifty) only worth of revenue has been waived on
account of consultations rendered to indigent patients, either
free or on concession, which tantamount to charity.
2.
Surgeries : Presently the foundation conducts major surgical
activities at outside nursing homes / hospitals wherein the revenue
generated is credited to "Calcutta Eye Research Foundation'.
During April 2001 - March 2002 the foundation performed a total
of 403 ocular / extraocular operative procedures, of which 62
(15%) were totally free of charge,. This amounted to professional
service charges of approximately Rs. 2,50,420/- (Rupees two lakhs
fifty thousand four hundred twenty) only being waived for charitable
cause.
Of
the 62 free eye operations, 35 (44%) were of patients from the
lowest socio-economic status who could not even afford the nursing
home charges and material costs, the amount having been totally
sponsored by our foundation. This amounted to a total expenditure
of Rs. 67,994/- (Rupees sixty-seven thousand nine hundred ninety
four) only.
Thus,
a total equivalent expenditure of Rs. 3,18,414/- (Rupees three
lakhs eighteen thousand four hunched and fourteen) only was incurred
by the foundation towards charitable surgery activities for indigent
patients during April 2001 - March 2002.
